Poem: Go Forth

10/29/2009

Hard to believe we’re in week 3 of the Torah. How time flies! Creation, destruction, and the first “real Jew” on the scene: Abraham. The one to whom God promises a universe of descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky. The first guy to circumcise himself and his boy-children. I became obsessed with the true nature of covenant between human & divine. If women aren’t circumcised on the 8th day, are we left outside this whole business? That got me to thinking about the real covenant: our yearning for eternal life, left behind in Eden, and the true limits of our fleshy selves. We think the agreement, the deal is about circumcision, but it ain’t. A little piece of foreskin is the least of it. See the poem here, which was first published in Isotope in slightly different form.

Why am I reading your stuff at 7 in the morning? Is this friendship (the real covenant) or am I afraid to be alone with my coffee?
